How I went from underachieving, to excelling in my studies.
Before there were any top grades, stress free exam seasons and success stories to tell.... there was an unconfident, lost student.
Stuck in a rut.
Consistently struggling with her studies.
Scared to death of failing each and every exam she took and wondering how on earth she'd make it through her A-levels (let alone her Masters in Law).
You see during school, college and even my first year of University I constantly struggled to achieve grades that truly reflected my efforts… and honestly for a very long time I could not figure out why!
It seemed as though no matter how many notes I wrote, revisions sessions I planned or tutors I went to, my grades would always fluctuate.
The straw that broke the camels back.
It was the year 2015 and I'm walking into University with all of my friends, on the way to receive one of our first exam results.
Nervous? Kinda - but not really. I'd worked hard for this (like real hard). I'd put in the hours, I'd done the research, I'd even become that go to girl for all of my friends who were getting stuck.
So, as I'm confidently walking up to the table to find my paper you can imagine my surprise when I find a big red 52% written on the front page of my work…. whilst all my friends had managed to get at least 70%.
And then came the tears (yep I'm a crier)!
And to follow… the stomach dropping, kick you in the gut, anxiety inducing thoughts:
I can't do this... I tried so hard, what am I supposed to do now... everyone must think I'm stupid... maybe I am just stupid!
Jeez did that ever suck!! So what did I do? Well I did not put on my big girl pants let me tell you that right now!!
Nope.
I got in my car and drove alllllllll the way back home for some TLC from my incredible family and boyfriend.
I felt like I had nothing left in me to give and I was starting to realise that this idea of ‘getting a law degree and becoming a Solicitor' was just that an idea, never to become a reality!
But after having those tiny tears and getting a bit of tough love, I finally realised some hard truths:
I've been in the pits, right beside you.
Hard work doesn't always equal success
Worrying, dwelling and crying about it won't change anything
Moving on and letting go is the only option you have.
And after the dust settled and I finally accepted this, I took a stand.
I finally learnt how to learn.
You see the problem was never my actual ability nor my intelligence, it was simply my direction.
To put it plainly I was going 100mph down the wrong road, utilising improper (overused) revision techniques that work in total opposition of how our brains actually learn.
So, in the midst of learning what to learn, I also took the time to understand how to learn.
The result?
My grades went through the roof…
Allowing me to leave my Undergraduate and Postgraduate Law Degree with the highest qualifications that could be achieved.
And if I can do this, there is no reason why you can't either!
I don't want you to have to spend years struggling like I did, nor I do I believe you should have to learn the hard way!
